Chicano Latino Studies 330

This is a topic course that will introduce students to Latinxs in Reggaeton and Hip Hop. The course will include material on male performers and thinkers, however, there is an explicit focus on women in this course to mirror the explicit content and roles women have often been placed into within these genres. Through discussion questions, two position papers, and a final research paper students will analyze and theorize about the sexual, economic, and political agency of women in these genres. Students will be expected to use an interdisciplinary approach involving text/lyric analysis, performance/visual analysis, and draw on theoretical frameworks introduced through class. Students will engage with Black, feminist/womanist, and music theoretical frameworks to critically think about the role and purpose of Latinas in reggaeton and hip hop. The content of the class will include video, readings, and of course songs.
